Ion channels and neuronal dysfunction in multiple sclerosis.

چکیده
W hat causes the signs and symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS)? It is almost axiomatic to regard MS as a demyelinating disorder in which axonal conduction block, caused by loss of myelin, produces clinical deficits. In addition, during the past few years, increased attention has focused on axonal degeneration in MS. The available evidence suggests that demyelination provides a structural correlate for relapsingremitting disease while axonal degeneration, which may be associated with atrophy of the brain and spinal cord, produces nonremitting deficits.

O 13: Ion Channels in Autoimmune Neurodegeneration
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system characterized by widespread inflammation, focal demyelination and a variable degree of axonal and neuronal loss. Ionic conductances regulate T cell activation as well as neuronal function and thus have been found to play a crucial role in MS pathogenesis. Since present therapeutical approaches are only parti...
متن کاملP 46: The Role of Kv7-Channels in the Pathophysiology of Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune CNS-disease characterized by inflammatory neurodegenerative events occurring with de- and remyelination. Recent evidence show that demyelinated neurons are less excitable than myelinated ones while at early stages of remyelination these neurons seem to be hyperexcitable. The latter is a transitory condition that, very likely, leads to impaired neuronal networ...
متن کاملRelationship between Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Multiple Sclerosis: A Review Study
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system that inflammation, demyelination, oligodendrocyte loss, gliosis, axonal injury and neurodegeneration are the main histopathological hallmarks of the disease. Although MS was classically thought as a demyelinating disease, but axonal injury occurs commonly in acute inflammatory lesions. In MS mi...
متن کاملRegulation of gene expression in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis indicates early neuronal dysfunction.
Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory, demyelinating disease of the CNS. Whereas oligodendrocytes have been considered the primary neural cell type most affected, recent evidence indicates that axonal and neuronal degeneration also occurs in both multiple sclerosis and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model reproducing many features of multiple sclerosis. The molecular...
متن کاملThe Factors Associated With Olfactory Dysfunction in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis
Introduction: An impaired sense of smell has a remarkable impact on the quality of life. It is seen in a variety of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson disease. In this study, we assessed the olfactory function in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) by Sniff Magnitude Test (SMT). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 48 patients with MS. A questionnaire, including demog...
